Announcing winners of Pan IIT American Leadership Awards

Friends, It is my great pleasure to announce the winners of Pan IIT American Leadership Awards 2009. This is the inaugural year for these awards and this is the first time we, as alumni, are recognizing the best amongst us and across all seven IIT campuses. Thanks to your enthusiastic participation, we received over 200 nominations. With so many deserving candidates, the selection was not easy. The judges probably felt similar to the Nobel prize selection committee in 1901 – when the first set of Nobel prizes were awarded! With a large backlog of highly deserving candidates, the first few years of any award are the most difficult. Many thanks to the distinguished panel of judges (from all seven IITs) for spending countless hours analyzing all the nominations. They had to save some very deserving names for future years. The winners are as follows: Lifetime Achievement Award: Rajeev Motwani, (Late) Professor of Computer Science at Stanford. Rajeev won several awards including the prestigious Godel prize in 2001. He was the co-author of an early paper on PageRank algorithm which formed the basis for Google. He was an advisor/mentor to numerous companies and entrepreneurs. -- Academic Excellence Award: Pradeep Khosla, Dean, College of Engineering, CMU. Pradeep is a highly regarded name in academia. He has received several awards and is an elected Fellow of IEEE, AAAI, and AAAS. Pradeep has written three books, and over 350 journal articles. He is also a consultant for companies and VCs and serves on the technology advisory board for several companies. -- Corporate Excellence Award: Padmasree Warrior, CTO Cisco. Padmasree was formerly the CTO of Motorola. A highly successful corporate leader, she was named as one of the four rising stars by Fortune magazine on its Most Powerful Women in Business list and was ranked 11th Most Influential Global Indian by the Economic Times. -- Entrepreneurial Achievement Award: Suhas Patil, Chairman Emeritus Cirrus Logic, Chairman Digite and Cradle Technologies. Suhas was the founder of Cirrus Logic, one of world’s leading semiconductor company. He was also a co-founder and visionary behind TiE. Suhas is an angel investor in several start-ups and is also a philanthropist. A 1965 graduate, he is still as active as ever. -- Technology Leadership Award: Ravi Sethi, President, Avaya Labs Research. Perhaps best known for the “dragon book” which is a bible for compiler students, Ravi has had an exceptionally distinguished career. Ravi was a senior VP at Bell labs, and has headed two of the three research divisions there. He also served as CTO at Lucent. -- Please join me in congratulating the winners. Dr. Sudhir Jain is an IIT Roorkee and Caltech alumnus, and former Dean of IIT Kanpur. At the meeting Dr. Jain will discuss New Higher Education initiatives in India with focus on IIT Gandhinagar. He will touch upon the following topics which are of broad interest. - Why new IIT's? The primary objective of this event is to help the freshly graduating batches from all the IIT's across the country, who now have made this great megacity as their home, a chance to interact with the local PANIIT alumni and subsequently integrate with the mainstream of business and life of this city!
